  • Giuseppe Tartini Square: A Historical Gem in Piran, Slovenia

Nestled in the heart of Piran, Slovenia, Giuseppe Tartini Square stands as the town's largest and most iconic square. Named after the renowned 18th-century violinist and composer Giuseppe Tartini, this vibrant square is a must-visit destination for anyone exploring this charming seaside town. A Rich History Tartini Square, with its picturesque harbour leading directly into its open expanse, is steeped in history. Originally, this area served as an inner dock for smaller vessels, such as fishing boats, and was located outside of Piran's first city walls. Over time, the dock became surrounded by significant buildings and palaces, turning it into a central hub of the town. However, the dock's location also led to sanitation issues, prompting town officials to bury it and establish a proper square in 1894. This transformation marked the beginning of a new era for Piran, with new buildings cropping up around the square, including the impressive Town Hall. Among these structures, the Gothic Benečanka, or Venetian House, dating back to the 15th century, still retains its original exterior. Tartini's Monument The square's focal point is the bronze monument to Giuseppe Tartini, sculpted by Antonio Dal Zòtto in 1896. This statue pays homage to the local hero whose legacy continues to resonate through the town. Tartini's story is fascinating and well worth exploring, whether through a guided tour or online research. Architectural Marvels and Modern Additions Giuseppe Tartini Square is not just about history; it also features stunning architecture and modern renovations. The ellipse platform, made of white stone and designed by architect Boris Podrecca, was added during the 300th anniversary of Tartini's birth, enhancing the square's aesthetic appeal. The surrounding buildings showcase a blend of Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque styles, making it a visual delight for architecture enthusiasts. Tartini Square Restaurants One of the highlights of visiting Tartini Square is the variety of dining options available. The square boasts several bars, cafés, and restaurants where you can savoir local Slovenian cuisine while soaking in the lively atmosphere. Whether you're in the mood for a quick coffee, a light snack, or a full meal, there's something for everyone. The pleasant vibe of the square makes it an ideal spot to sit and watch the world go by. Practical Information for Visitors For those planning to visit Giuseppe Tartini Square, here are a few tips: The square is a short walk uphill from the harbour, so wear comfortable shoes. There are plenty of seating areas, so you can rest and take in the views. Be sure to bring a camera to capture the stunning architecture and lively ambiance. Conclusion Giuseppe Tartini Square is a gem that perfectly encapsulates the charm and history of Piran. Its blend of historical significance, architectural beauty, and vibrant atmosphere makes it a must-visit for anyone exploring Slovenia. There is a small swimming pool by the lake in the summer. Next to it is an inn with Slovenian food. Fishing is also possible in the lake. The lake was created in 1953 when a dam was built during the construction of the Medvode hydroelectric power station. In Zbilje, you can find a rental of canoes and boats, as well as a bar where you can sunbathe on deckchairs. Next to the lake, there is also a very nicely arranged playground for children, a volleyball court, and a place for picnics. Visit Lake Zbiljsko >> 4. Lake Gradiško Lake Gradiško is an artificially dammed lake near Gradišče in the municipality of Lukovica. Since 2015, every year at the beginning of June, a sailing regatta with Mini 12-type sailboats has been held on Lake Gradiško Jezera. The regatta is organized by Adam Ravbar's Sailing Club, which also regularly organizes regattas in Dalmatia and on Lake Bohinj. Visit Lake Gradiško >> 5. Lake Trboj Trbojsko Jezero, also called Mavčiško and Kranjsko Jezero, is an artificial lake west of the village of Trboje in the municipality of Šenčur in northwestern Slovenia. Dante Alighieri and Dante's Cave: A Poetic Inspiration. Tolminska korita, encompassing the Tolminka and Zadlaščica basins, stand as one of the most magnificent natural attractions in Tolminska. These basins, collectively known as the Tolmin Gorges, offer a mesmerizing entry point to the stunning Triglav National Park. Embark on a circular route that winds through the untamed riverbeds of Tolminka and Zadlaščica, where the rivers converge in a unique confluence found nowhere else in Slovenia. Dante Alighieri and Dante's Cave-Tolmin Gorges Legend has it that the renowned Italian poet Dante Alighieri once visited the Zadlaška cave, nestled above the Tolmin riverbeds. The raw beauty and untamed wilderness of this place are believed to have inspired him to depict Hell in his epic poem, the Divine Comedy. To honor his connection to this ethereal setting, the cave system, spanning 1140 meters with three majestic halls, was aptly named after him. Access to Dante's Cave requires a reservation with a cave guide. However, even without a guide, you can still marvel at the cave's entrance, which is a sight to behold. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fRorcmVlLjY The Devil's Bridge: A Spectacular View of Tolminka Prepare for a remarkable finale to your Tolmin Basin adventure as you witness the Tolminka River from a bird's eye perspective on the Devil's Bridge. This bridge, constructed in 1907, connects the ecological village of Čadrg with the rest of the world. Its name stems from a local legend about a devil who allegedly built the bridge. In bygone times, villagers relied on a small bridge at the bottom of the Tolminka River's riverbed to traverse to and from the city. Standing on the Devil's Bridge, you'll be captivated by the awe-inspiring panorama that unfolds before you. As you navigate the gorges, prepare to be immersed in a world of flourishing flora. The basins of Zadlaščica enchant with picturesque waterfalls and a striking wedged rock, locally known as Medvedova glava (Bear's Head). Meanwhile, in the Tolminka basins, you'll have the opportunity to witness a thermal spring at a low water level, providing a unique natural spectacle. Embrace the natural wonders, including the endemic narrow-leaved sedge, the vibrant Soča immortelle, and the elusive rock deer, as you traverse the troughs. Tolmin Gorges offer a serene sanctuary for nature lovers and an unparalleled opportunity to connect with Slovenia's untamed beauty. So, embark on this unforgettable journey to the Tolmin Gorges and immerse yourself in the picturesque and wild troughs, capturing the essence of Triglav National Park's lowest entry point.

  • Slovenia holidays for active travellers: A Journey Through Vintgar Gorge

Do you want to experience the beauty of unspoiled nature? Visit the Vintgar Gorge, a hidden gem near Bled. Because of its natural beauty, it belongs to the protected area of the Triglav Natural Park and NATURA 2000 network. Only together we can show a respectful attitude towards nature while visiting this amazing natural treasure by really taking care of cleanliness. We want to give you some useful tips before you go on this wonderful adventure, so you can enjoy it to the fullest. A Timeless Tale of Nature's Majesty For over 10,000 years, dating back to the last ice age, Vintgar Gorge remained a hidden sanctuary, its beauty veiled by the Radovna River's relentless flow. It wasn't until 1891 that the gorge's secrets began to reveal themselves. Local legend credits Jakob Žumer, the mayor of Gorje, and photographer Benedikt Lergetporer with venturing into the gorge when water levels were exceptionally low. Their exploration ignited a desire to share this natural marvel with the world. Just two years later, in 1893, a remarkable feat of engineering opened Vintgar Gorge to the public. Over 500 meters of wooden walkways and bridges were meticulously constructed, hugging the gorge walls and allowing visitors to experience its magic firsthand. Today, Vintgar Gorge stands not only as a testament to nature's artistry but also as a symbol of human ingenuity in preserving its beauty for generations to come. Slovenia holidays for active travellers Planning your Slovenian adventure? Vintgar Gorge is a must-visit for nature enthusiasts and photographers alike. Here's what you need to know: Planning and Preparation: To ensure a smooth visit, purchase your tickets online in advance, especially during peak season. Due to the uneven terrain with wooden bridges and walkways, the gorge is not suitable for children under 3 years old, prams, or wheelchairs. Wear sturdy, comfortable shoes with good grip for a safe and enjoyable experience. Reaching the Emerald Gates: The gorge is easily accessible by car, motorbike, or bicycle, especially if you're staying near Lake Bled. The journey itself is a scenic prelude to the main event, with the road offering glimpses of the surrounding countryside. A Fairytale Walkway Through a Carved Landscape: Prepare to be mesmerized as you embark on the 1.6-kilometer one-way path through the gorge. The wooden walkway, seamlessly integrated into the rock face, winds its way along the Radovna River, offering breathtaking views at every turn.  Crystal-clear water cascades over moss-covered rocks, forming emerald pools that shimmer in the sunlight. The air hums with the vibrant energy of nature – the gentle melody of the flowing water, the whisper of leaves dancing in the breeze, and the occasional chirp of unseen birds. Every bend reveals a new vista, more stunning than the last. The power of nature is evident in the towering rock walls, sculpted by time and water. Be sure to take your time, soak in the sights and sounds, and capture this mesmerizing landscape with your camera. Unveiling the Secrets Beyond the Gorge After traversing the captivating gorge, you'll reach the mighty Šum Waterfall, a 13-meter cascade that serves as the exit point. Take a moment to rest, refresh yourself with a cool drink from a nearby vendor, and marvel at the power and beauty of the cascading water. From here, your adventure has two exciting options: The King Triglav Trail:  Ascend the 4.1-kilometer King Triglav trail, named after Slovenia's highest mountain. This path winds through pastures and forests, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and idyllic villages. Immerse yourself in the harmonious relationship between nature and human settlements. The River of Trees Trail:   Embark on a unique journey through the treetops on the 2.7-kilometer River of Trees trail. This elevated path takes you on an adventure high above the Vintgar Gorge, offering a bird's-eye view of the emerald waters and lush vegetation. Breathe in the fresh mountain air and appreciate the diverse ecosystem from this unique perspective. Both trails culminate in a well-deserved reward – delicious snacks prepared by a renowned Michelin-starred chef. Savour the flavours while reminiscing about your unforgettable journey through Vintgar Gorge. Unveiling Slovenia's Magic Awaits Vintgar Gorge is more than just a scenic attraction; it's an experience that awakens the senses and leaves a lasting impression.
